Real Good Grammar

Well since my blog article was posted on a popular website and got slammed for bad writing, I've decided to review grammar rules. See if you can answer these questions:

  • Do you know the difference between affect and effect?
  • Do you know whether to place periods and commas inside or outside closing quotation marks?
  • Do you know when to use these words: lie, lying, lay, lain; laying, laid? Or do you just avoid them all together?
  • Do you know when to use a semicolon?
  • Do you sometimes use the word that to avoid making a decision about who and whom?
  • Do you often use myself when you can't decide whether to use I or me?
  • Which is correct: sincerest, most sincerest, or most sincere?
  • Is this sentence correct? We appreciate you contacting us.
  • Do you know what subjunctive mood is?
  • If you saw this sentence on the front of a major magazine or newspaper, would you call the publisher or editor to complain about the grammar? Have the media been fair and responsible in reporting the events?
  • If you put your family's last name on a door knocker, a welcome mat, or a Christmas card, would you use an apostrophe -- the Smith's?
  • Does this look wrong to you -- Keeping up with the Joneses?
  • Is its, its' or it's correct in this sentence? The naval museum celebrates ___ anniversary.
  • Is it sexist to use a masculine pronoun to refer to a word with dual gender like employee or student?
  • Is it a historical or an historical occasion?
  • Should job titles be capitalized?
  • Is irregardless a word?
Some of the answer to these may surprise you!
